What’s so great about promotions and events? Should I bother?
We know that this question rings loud in your mind when confronted with the idea of doing special promotions or events for your business. Our answer? It would be a waste to pass them up. The reality is there is positive momentum and substantial benefit to your brand brought about in a unique way through the use of promotions and special events. These effects far outweigh the relatively small amount of work that it takes to put these promotions together. The concept is tried and true, and the proof is measurable.
As many business people know, one of the most effective forms of advertising is word of mouth. A woman who excitedly tells a friend, “You’ve just got to try this” has most likely just made a sale for the company or product in question. In turn, when your business creates a special event or promotion that features exciting giveaways or fun activities you create a buzz around the event and around your company, and this naturally becomes word of mouth advertising.
Another valuable and observable effect of events and promotions is the strong relationship that you build with your customers. Depending on the specific components making up a promotion, you can project a strong image of company identity and reach consumers at an emotional and relational level. Food or donation drives, informational classes and kids’ activities are just a few examples of promotional elements that consumers appreciate, which in turn increases their trust and loyalty to your company – not to mention more word of mouth advertising!
Promotions are also a fantastic way to get the most bang for your buck. When tied in with media outlets like radio and TV, additional on-air promotions and web or E-blast inclusions are usually offered, giving your company added exposure for free. Additionally, what could have been an expensive bill for food or a grand prize can often be eliminated by partnering with another business, who will frequently donate these items based on trade value alone. The partnerships resulting from promotions can prove extremely beneficial for years to come, and you increase your momentum and market presence in the process, giving you an even greater ability to build effective partnerships and utilize promotions and events in your campaigns.
Do promotions represent a little bit of work? Sure they do. But the myriad of benefits are invaluable. Natural word of mouth advertising, positive image in the community, relationship-building and smart leveraging of funds are just a few of the reasons to say “yes” to promotions. Interested in discovering more about how events and promotions can make an impact on your business? We’d love to talk with you. |

How long have you been in the advertising business? Eight years with Entercom Radio - KWJJ & KRSK
Biggest challenge of job: The biggest challenge I face right now is the market. My clients are feeling the impact of a slowing economy and it affects their marketing decisions. Here's a quote from the Wizard of Ads Monday Morning Memo: Thrive in a Recession. "Market share is easily won when your competitors are cutting expenses. The big frustration comes when you learn that growing your market share doesn't mean an immediate increase in revenues. When times are good and money is abundant, it's easy to coast on yesterday's reputation. You've seen it happen. But when there's not enough business to go around, the rules revert to survival of the fittest. This is when courageous little companies leapfrog their traditional master sand leave them on the trail behind".
Biggest reward of job: This is one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever been in. I love coming up with new ideas for my clients that help them stand out from their competition. I also pride myself on the fact that my clients trust me with more than their radio advertising and will come to me looking for ideas for their "market wide" media campaigns or special events.
Any fun news? My husband and I were in a Reality Show called "Born Country" My Big Redneck Wedding. CMT Loved the fact that I was a professional business woman married to a good ol' fashion Redneck. I planned the wedding like I do one of my promotions and paid attention to every detail! We were married in a barn by an Ultimate Fighter, we had casino tables, live country band, mechanical bull, wedding cake with the addition of Ding Dong's, Twinkies and Ho Ho's... oh and a mini monster truck show. It was a Redneck wedding with "class" if you can imagine that. ;)
Awards/recognition: "Turn It Up Rising Star", I was the first to win Entercom's "Creative Idea Award" (twice), 2004 Entercom Sales Club President Award.
A success secret - what is something that you do that helps you be great at your job? I keep in touch with my clients on a regular basis. I honestly want to know how their business is doing and what I can do to help. I don't only stop in on my clients about business, I think it's important to stop by even if it's just to drop off tickets to an event. I always want my clients to know I am thinking about them all year around and not just when an avail comes up.
Favorite pastimes or hobbies: Spending time with family and friends, our home is a place they always feel welcome. My husband and I are spontaneous...we take advantage of our time off. We enjoy everything the NW has to offer like hiking, white water rafting, mountain biking, wine tasting, trips to the coast, etc...

Consider modifying your direct mail habit and sending e-flyers in place of postcards. Studies have shown that direct mail only reaches 1-2% of its target, while e-flyers reach 15% or more.
E-flyers are electronic while direct mail contributes to landfills. So, not only are e-flyers more effective, affordable, and trackable, but there is no waste. Talk to us about getting green with e-flyers.
