Basic Black by Cathie Black is a great book with new tidbits, entertaining anecdotes and good business reminders for the seasoned professional. This is a fantastic read for someone starting out in the media world and it also crosses over very well for anyone in business with great work and life principles. One of my favorite parts of the book is the case study when Cathie and co-worker Ellen pitched Oprah to do her own magazine. Anyone who passes a magazine stand now knows how that meeting turned out, but the magazine may not have ever happened if Cathie and Ellen hadn’t tailored their message to their target audience and seized their moment – two of the principles taught in the book.

Or should we say “brand news”! There are many things here at Edge Multimedia that are brand new… a brand new logo, slogan and website, a brand new client and four brand new babies!
Our new image brings us up to date to where our company is internally. Our new slogan, “Your Edge Is Where We Begin”, is significant in that it represents how we facilitate our client relationships. We begin by continuing our clients' own mission to market beyond what they have been able to do for themselves. We recognize the load of responsibilities that our clients carry when it comes to running their businesses, and we step in to catapult them to the next level of success. We utilize our clients' own unique edge in their market to its fullest extent, identifying the areas where they shine and bringing that into sharp focus. Learn more about Edge and view some of our latest work at EdgeMM.com.
Our brand new client, Sun Gro Horticulture, Inc., is a horticulture company that manufactures Black Gold potting soils, amendments and fertilizers, along with many other brands. Their products are amazing and we have really enjoyed working with them to put together a smart marketing strategy for the western region of the US. We are in the process of crafting new TV and radio ads, designing new websites for several of their brands and developing a multimedia showcase for use at trade shows.
It’s been a 12 month baby boom at Edge Multimedia. Pictured in order of birth: CEO/President Scott Chadwick and EVP Sales/Marketing Stephanie Chadwick gave birth to Aleah Alison on 2/1/07; Business Manager Karen Chadwick gave birth to Micah James on 4/28/07; Traffic/Project Manager Michelle Rubio gave birth to Abigail Elyse on 6/22/07; Creative Director Dan Herman and Marketing/Events Coordinator Noelle Herman gave birth to Averie Rose on 10/28/07. Yes, that is four babies for six employees. Our company is growing in more ways than one and we welcome the blessings of these additions to our families.

You work so hard to carefully invest your advertising dollars in order to reach your customers and increase your market share. Don’t blow it with bad creative. Achieving an effective advertising response is the culmination of smart creative and strategic media planning working together. So, how creative is your creative?
We are emotional beings. Considering the emotional element is critical when planning your creative message. This is aptly noted in The Advertised Mind, by Erik du Plessis with Foreword by Nigel Hollis and Millward Brown: “Emotion is critical to advertising because it is critical to all human thought.”
Just the other day I was watching television and I saw a local ad for a group of eye doctors. The voiceover was edited so poorly that part of the word “family” in the middle of the spot was actually cut off. How unfortunate. Emotionally, I am not left with a positive impression, I’m left feeling like this company doesn’t really know what they’re doing and I’m definitely not going there to get corrective eyewear!
When it comes to doing broadcast advertising, the creative element often gets overlooked, especially when it is left in the hands of people who are doing it for “free” as part of a package deal with the station. Don’t take that risk. Don’t put your creative message into the hands of a production assistant at some studio somewhere that has no passion for your business, product or message! They’re just cranking out production jobs as quickly as they can.
It’s a shame to let your advertising dollars go to waste – or even worse, to have them work against you. A strong creative message can reinforce your brand, make a positive impression in the mind of the consumer, and make your product memorable when it comes to the point of purchase. And I mean memorable in a good way… you don’t want your creative to make you look unprofessional or amateur in front of your target audience. That defeats your efforts instead of supporting them.
So I ask you to consider, how creative is your creative?
Wondering how Edge can help you with your creative message? Contact us, we welcome a conversation with you.

How long have you been in the advertising business? I have been with Entercom for 10 years... Starting at KIRO/ KIRO FM (The Buzz) and then on KMTT The Mountain (it's been 7 years!)
Biggest challenge of your job: Finding enough time to check in on Minnie at the Barking Lounge Website! I think our jobs require us to wear many hats... salesperson, promotional guru, accountant, bill collector, etc... Lots of multi-tasking, and sometimes it's hard to figure out which "job" you should be doing. I think it's both the most challenging part and the part the keeps our jobs interesting!
Biggest reward of job: Meeting and working with fun, smart, cool people... I have made lifelong friends from doing this job in this industry!
Favorite business book: "Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson.
Awards/recognition: Sales Club
A success secret - what is something that you do that helps you be great at your job? I think I approach co-workers and clients with respect and treat everyone accordingly. It makes a huge difference when you get a chance to talk on the phone or visit with each other. A great compliment I receive in the office is that people can't tell if I am talking to a friend or a client on the phone.
Favorite pastimes or hobbies: I like shopping... and of course for new shoes :-) ; having cocktails with friends (that's a hobby, right?!); watching football (I just won the most pts in my fantasy league!); bowling... I have my own ball and am in a bowling league... nerd!! And of course hanging with the best dog ever.. Minnie, our 18 mo. English Bulldog!
Any exciting news? I am recently engaged to Eric. We met when he was working with Entercom 7 years ago - who said office romances don't work?
